We had the pleasure and privilege of receiving early copies of the Nightbringer and Titus and the Wardens of Ultramar for the purpose of reviewing and painting. Thank you again to Games Workshop for sending free review copies, and as ever please remember that these thoughts are our own personal take on these kits and what we anticipate they'll do to our games with our beloved God-Engines.
While the sprues and other information have already been shown off, we do want to at least talk about the kits briefly:
- Nightbringer - Okay, this thing is a mild pain to build from the standpoint of the instructions not calling out the contact points well, but DANG this thing is detailed, stable, and works really well as a design!
- The plastic quality is exactly what you expect and the mold lines are easy to clean.
- Titus and the Wardens of Ultramar - We're not sure if it's just a weird batch or if you'll see this across the board, but we found the plastic for our review kit was halfway between that used for a normal kit and the terrain kits. It felt different but we couldn't quite place it.
- Add to that that the mold lines on this were far worse than normal and we think it was just a weird day.
- Despite the design feeling like a snap-fit set without the pegs, it was very easy to put together and honestly benefited from it so as to avoid all the weird gaps you normally get with cloaks and the like.
Did we have fun building? Yes.
Did we have fun painting? Most definitely.
Titus is CAPTAIN once more and the Nightbringer is bigger. But have they become a threat to our God-Machines?
Titus himself does not threaten our Titans any more than a standard Captain of any Space Marine Chapter. He does not provide the kind of resistance against Titans as say, Captain Lysander, but with that said, you definitely don't want him near your Skitarii guarding your Titans. He absolutely MULCHES infantry.
When the Wardens of Ultramar come in, you have a bit of trickery (i.e. strategic thinking) that will at least help. With the Strategium Command rule, you can redeploy up to three ADEPTUS ASTARTES units after everyone has set up, opening you up to new lines of fire you now have to contend with.
What hurts far more? The new Nightbringer profile. There's a lot to unpack for the Necron players as their C'tan saw HUGE boosts, but let's talk about what should make a Princeps target these shards of gods sooner than we used to:
Gaze of Death sticks you with up to three attacks 2+ that are S12, AP-3, and can do up to 9 damage per wound. Ouch!
Then its scythe in Strike mode has 6 attacks hitting on 2+ at S14, AP-4, and doing up to 8 damage per wound.
Do not let this thing near a Titan. Do NOT let that near a Titan. While you can indeed kill it, it will certainly take chunks out of your ceramite and adamantium hide. This is a massive upgrade to a shard of a god of death and one that is most welcome for Necron players.
We hope you've enjoyed our review of these new models and that you're ready to find new ways to counter these threats.
