Comments: The history behind the maniple in the 40k setting is they are the some of the  remnants of the Legio Gryphonicus after the Forgeworld Gryphonne IV was eleminated by the Tyranids. The cracked artwork on the armour plates are symbolic of this destruction. The Blood Sires were names as such for their close support of Blood Angels forces whenever called upon, as they view the Sons of Sanguinius as the paragon of the those who still fight for the Emperor's dream of Mankind.

In the 30k setting the maniple fought alongside Sanguinius and his Sons and forged a close bond with them especially with their fire support tactics. The maniple and the titans have their etymology based on this and each of the titans honours the Blood Angels and the Angel as such.
